Abstract
<p>Objectives: Despite progressive improvements in the diagnosis and surgical treatment, infective endocarditis (IE) remains connected to a high rate of complications and mortality. We studied temporal trends in the mortality by infective endocarditis in Portugal.<br /> Methods: Retrospective temporal trend population based study, using data obtained from the Portuguese National Institute of Statistics (INE) from 2000 to 2017. We collected the mortality rate in Portugal at each year for the ICD 9 code 421 (2000-01) and ICD10 I33 (2002-17). A univariate linear regression analysis was performed.<br /> Results:<br /> The mortality rate per 100000 inhabitants by infective endocarditis in Portugal varied between 0.23 and 0.58, considerably lower than for other cardiovascular diseases. Nevertheless, an overall upper trend was noted in the last 20 years, which is in opposite direction with the trends identified regarding other cardiovascular diseases.</p> <p>Conclusions:<br /> Despite considerable advances in the diagnosis and treatment of IE patients, these data reinforce the need to caracterize the epidemiology of IE in Portugal, as they may provide crucial data to support new measures in the prevention and control of this disease</p>
